A great graphic novel, it combines the humor of a disgusting dead end job with facts about garbage. I've heard about the planned obsolescence and how we as American throw away a lot of stuff but some of the facts were disturbing. Fortunately, the humor (for example throwing roadkill at one anothe... Read More »

A fascinating story about garbage and the people who have to deal with it. Graphic story format isn't my favourite, but the drawings and illustrations create an extremely compelling (and personal) story about what we throw away and where it goes.
Strongly recommended reading!

Shortly after the events described in his book about serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, Derf dropped out of college and took a dirty job hauling trash on a smelly city garbage truck. Years later, Derf wrote this cartoon memoir about his garbage truck days. Sadly, the life of a garbage man is not exactly edge-of-your-seat reading material. Derf tries to cover the extremely thin plot by padding the book with a sprinkling of EPA approved educational facts about North America's ever-growing mountain of trash.

Great drawings, but no story to speak of, and misogynistic.

Very good read. I liked the informational passages more than the storyline, though both were engrossing. Encouraged that some garbage dumps are being converted to solar energy farms.

Sickening and disgusting and disturbing look at our throw away culture, complete disregard for our environment and those who spend their lives picking up after the rest of us. Backderf definitely has his own style that many may not appreciate but this is worth a read.

Backderf's unique blend of information and autobiography makes for a wonderful look at the trash habits of humanity.

A great graphic novel, it combines the humor of a disgusting dead end job with facts about garbage. I've heard about the planned obsolescence and how we as American throw away a lot of stuff but some of the facts were disturbing. Fortunately, the humor (for example throwing roadkill at one another) in the book offsets what is a very somber subject.
