Let me just start by saying; I like the Mortal Instruments better. But can any other series in the Shadowhunter world ever really top the original?
Now let me say; I loved this book.
I can see where people may be viewing Mrs. Clare's continuously growing prospects for spin-off series in the Shadowhunter world and seem annoyed or incredulous, thinking she's 'milking the same cow over and over', but it would be hard to keep those feelings after reading any of her books.
I am always surprised by the ease in which I am transported into Clare's books, how I almost instantly connect with the characters and feel their pains and joys. She knows how to artfully weave a story of heartbreak and hope, of injustice underlying her world just as well as friendship.
Taking place about 5 years after the City of Heavenly Fire, Emma Carstairs is in LA, working everyday on keeping up with her training and looking into every possible lead on who really killed her parents and why. Living with the Blackthorns has been the best thing that's happened to her since the Dark War, even if there's something about her parabatai, Julian that's suddenly making her feel and think things forbidden to them.
With her new best friend Cristina going the group for her travel year, Emma becomes aware of a promising lead into her parent's murder.
As death after death become uncovered, and faerie involvement drops a very-changed Mark back on the Institute's doors, Emma begins to lose sight how this all connects to the investigation she's really interested in.
With issues of the heart and dangers of the body seemingly at every turn, Emma, Julian, Cristina and the Blackthorns must re=examine who they can trust and figure out how to solve this murder mystery before they become victims of their own.

I absolutely love this book. It will shatter your soul and captivate you in an adventurous and heart-breaking world. Join Emma as she tries to find the one responsible for the murders of her parents. Cassandra Clare is one of my favourite authors. Her writing is stunning.

This book is a series of events where a girl named Emma and a boy named Julian work with their friends to avenge Emma's parents. The clave, which is Emma and Julian's "government" ruled the death of Emma's parents to be a misfortune event cause by the war. But in the war, the bodies weren't mutated and nothing was carved on them like what happened the war Emma's parents. Now a few years later, more bodies are turning up, mutated and gray, like the bodies of Emma's parents. Join them, on their heartbreaking yet adventurous journey to find the master mind behind the deaths.

I loved this book so much! I recommend at least reading City of Bones before reading this one. As always, Cassandra Clare wrote another amazing book and I can't wait to read her newest one!

Based on what happens five years later from The Mortal Instruments series, we learn more about the story of Emma Carstairs and the Blackthorn family, all now more grown up. We, as readers, now get to see a deeper level of the previous young girl whom we had gotten to know. I especially enjoyed reading parts in the books that talked briefly about those in the New York Institute and from the previous books (Clary, Jace, Magnus/Alec, Simon, and Isabelle). At the end of the copy I read, there was a short "scene" from the wedding of two particular characters we know and adore. This was a great continuation, and I unsurprisingly finished it in a day, despite it's heavy content and large amount of pages/text. Definitely, I would recommend this to any shadowhunter fan girl/boy. 5/5 - @Siri of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

Great way to continue a well loved series with new characters mixing with old. Cassandra Clare draws us back into the world of shadowhunters, magic, demons, and true love.

this book was quite good, but if you are waiting for the second or third book of the original series, do not read this. I enjoyed the different perspectives you got to listen to, and the book had an interesting plot that had twists and turns, and kept you interested. I could not put tis book down! there are a lot of characters from the original series that made an appearance which was a fun idea. I enjoyed this book quite a lot!

The poem Annabel Lee is the main influence, and the chapters are all lines from the poem

Instead of Clary and Jace, it's Julian and Emma, who were minor characters before. All in all, the Parabatai bond comes into play, and Magnus gets involved- again.
