This Bogart film was made between the two masterpieces The Maltese Falcon and Casablanca. Unlike those two masterpieces, this film was made with an able, but ordinary supporting cast. Also, while the The Maltese Falcon was based upon a extraordinarily good mystery novel and Casablanca was based upon a popular dramatic play, this film was based upon a very ordinary script written just for this film. The film was good and contained very good acting from Bogart, but without Bogart I suspect the film would never have been made. The film has a serious racial flaw in that one of the main supporting white actors dressed in black face performed a dance with a cartoonish black mannequin, which today is important in that it again shows how racist Hollywood was in 1942.
