This book started out as an epic #BethFail in terms of the type of book I thought I picked up and ended up being one of the best accidental discoveries I've ever made. I don't even like YA romance -- typically. Browsing the library shelves, I thought I was picking up a variation on "The Fault in Our Stars" (my reading comprehension of the book synopsis was clearly a fail also). In actuality, it was a book about two young adults each on their own journey to transform their lives through art, each battling struggles from family history. Although all the characters had faults - even the adults - the two main characters were amazingly mature and the obstacles they faced, while sometimes self-made, were never manufactured angst, as is often the crutch in romance books of all subgenres. The dialogue was witty, the moments of conflict were real and gut wrenching and the plot resolves in a manner that doesn't denigrate any character while allowing everyone to exorcise their past struggles. Honestly, this whole book played out like a script of a movie. I loved every bit of it.
