Meet Iain Reid: an overeducated, underemployed twenty-something who moves back in with his lovable but eccentric parents on their hobby farm. But what starts out as a temporary arrangement turns into a year-long extended stay, in which Iain finds himself fighting with the farm fowl, taking fashion advice from the elderly, fattening up on home-cooked food, and ultimately easing (perhaps a little too comfortably) into the semi-retired lifestyle. Hilarious and heartwarming, One Bird's Choice is an endearingly funny comic memoir that bridges the divide between the Boomer and Boomerang generations.

Easy, quick read with lots of self-deprecating humor and funny anecdotes. I especially liked the one where he went to the chicken coop to gather eggs and got pecked by an uncooperative hen.

Well, having been a 20-something that moved home after university, I could closely relate to Iain Reid's amusing stories. This novel seriously made me laugh out loud on several occasions. It is a short quick read, perfect for commuting.

This story is at once hilarious and heartfelt. I really enjoyed this book. Reid is a talented writer. I also laughed out loud when I saw the drawing of the guinea-fowl, Lucius, on the book jacket.

Written in a conversational tone, this book relates a year the author spent at home after some years on his own. He moved back to his parents small farm outside Ottawa called Lilac Hill. It's funny, charming and introspective.

I enjoyed this. And I doubly enjoyed his slightly eccentric but loving parents, siblings, family pets, sheep, chickens, extended family and odd characters at the gym.

Whether you were charmed by his parents, the farm, Iain's storytelling or Iain himself, the answer is clear: One Bird's Choice is taking home the Bookie for Best Non-Fiction Book. Do you think Iain's parents will put it on their mantel?"
