Raiders and traders, settlers and craftsmen, the medieval Scandinavians who have become familiar to history as Vikings never lose their capacity to fascinate, from their ingeniously designed longboats to their stormy pantheon of gods and goddesses. Robert Ferguson is a sure guide across what he calls "the treacherous marches which divide legend from fact in Viking Age history". His long familiarity with the literary culture of Scandinavia is combined with the latest archaeological discoveries to reveal a sweeping picture of one of history's most amazing civilizations.

Tries to piece together the origins of the Scandinavian people into story form. Covers the Swedes in the East to Icelanders. Illustrates well how the Christians are possessed by the lust to control others and how violent the Vikings were. In fact it is eye opening how ridiculous northern Europe was in terms of turmoil.

It is a must for the young people who are trying to find themselves today after the holocaust of Christianity. It provides a window into the old religion and how despite the sagas, there is not much to go back to. Knowing our history will be the way foreward. Like the Christians, we will have to invent new myths to live by to replace the obsolete Christianity and Odinic Rite.

Essential, thank you Mr. Fergusson.
