Michael Cimino's directorial debut is a taut heist picture with a youthful Jeff Bridges and a baleful, raging George Kennedy. Clint Eastwood does his thing as sex symbol of the 1970s. I love Hollywood pictures from 1970-1974 because they showcase American culture the last time it was substantially different from what it is today. Neoliberalism takes over beginning in the late '70s, and we've been dealing with the same paradigm for last 40 years now. It's interesting to note that Cimino's next movie, the Academy Award winning THE DEER HUNTER, was an important event in the re-establishment of American Exceptionalism, and re-imagining the American defeat in Vietnam, which was such a key component in the rise of Reaganism.

I saw this film when it came out in '74 and enjoyed it. This time not so much. When the psycho starts shooting t the ducks with his shotgun I immediately turned off fast forwarded to the final scene. Jeff Bridges did terrific acting job of a dying man trying to get in one more moment of living before lights out. Clint Eastwood certainly was popular but frankly he couldn't act his way out of a cheap paper bag. He has a very weak voice and hardly any facial movement and no modulation of voice. Want to complain about my synopsis?

This 1974 film has no message. It is just pure entertainment. This film features some vintage cars such as a 1949 Mercury 2-door sedan, a 1959 Cadillac with huge fins, a 1970 Pontiac Trans-Am, a 1973 Buick boattail Riviera and a 1974 Cadillac Eldorado convertible. For viewers who like vintage cars, indiscriminate shooting and car chases, I would rate "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot" at 3.0 stars.

Eastwood, George Kennedy and Jeff Bridges back when everyone was young and life was still full of surprises... including movies.

With the recent death of writer/director Michael Cimino, there may be renewed interest in this 1974 film, his debut. Cimino only directed 7 films and when he died in 2016, it'd been 20 years since his last film. "The Deer Hunter" remains his signature work and one of the iconic films of the 1970s. However, he followed it with the disastrous western "Heaven's Gate," which is still synonymous with bomb. His career never recovered. "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot" is a scruffy buddy crime film starring Clint Eastwood (One of Cimino's first jobs was writing a script for a Dirty Harry film) and Jeff Bridges, who have a great rapport together. Like a lot of 70s films, the characters are more important than the plot, which involves a bank robbery. George Kennedy and Geoffrey Lewis co-star.
