I'm a fan of the musical, so I was looking forward to this movie! You do have to view it a bit differently of course - nothing will be exactly as the play, but I felt like it worked well on the screen. This twisted fairy tale story keeps your interest throughout. Meryl Streep was fantastic as the... Read More »

Chris Pine singing!

No rating because I didn't finish this film, but I should say my piece--

When adapting a stage play or musical to film, things are bound to change (blocking, pacing, etc.), but there where changes made to elements of the story I consider to be important--the dual casting of roles (Cinderella's Prince w/ the Wolf; Cinderella's Mother w/ the Giant's Wife; the Mysterious Man w/ the Narrator), the importance of the Mysterious Man, the existence of the Narrator and the implications that entail with him, etc.

I also had the original Broadway recording to compare this to, which does not help the case of the film adaptation. I prefer the stage productions over the film on this one.

I loved this movie! I'd not seen the stage production, so this was my first time seeing it. What an amazing work of imagination, mashing up fairy tales in a way that creates a whole new story that transcends all the parts. It was hilarious at times, too. Johnny Depp makes for a perfect Wolf, by the way. The rest of the cast really impressed me -- Meryl Streep, of course, can do anything, I swear. But James Corden? I didn't know he could act and sing as well as he does in this movie -- he's marvelous. The editing in this movie is extraordinary and stunning, also, especially in the first 16 minutes. I've already ordered my own copy for my DVD library!

Fair to midland.

A movie that could sell on its cast alone, this modern musical mash-up of classic fairytales is quirky, suspenseful and full of music.

I was told to skip this movie, but I really wanted to watch it. I like musicals. OMG! So painful. I have no idea who wrote this but at points in time I had to wonder where they (the person who wrote this) went to school, I swear the actors were just speak/singing one note over and over for most of the movie. And don't even get me started on the creepy song the 'Wolf' sings to Little Red Riding Hood. I couldn't finish it. I have never turned off a Disney movie before the end. Unless you suffer from insomnia, skip this one.

loved this movie. A big fan of Chris Pine and Anna Kendrick

Stephen Sondheim is brilliant. I've seen a stage production of Into the Woods and have been listening to the soundtrack for years. This movie lives up to that standard.
Will it be everyone's cup of tea? Of course not. But if you love musical theater and appreciate complex songs with overlapping parts and a dark twist on familiar tales, you'll love this movie.

Our kids, who are 11 and 15, loved this movie so much that they watched it twice within 24 hours and now want us to buy a copy.

Awful awful awful. If it were possible to give this movie zero stars, I would. This is the only Disney movie in the history of Disney that I desperately wanted to walk out on, but I also kept hoping it would get better.. I seriously could not believe how awful this movie was. I imagine it plays differently on the stage, where it started, but my goodness I was so frustrated throughout the whole thing I just wanted to scream..

Both Princes: AGONYYYYYY!!!

Baker's Wife: [speaking to Cinderella] "I need that shoe to have a child."

Cinderella: "That makes no sense!"

Mar 31, 2015

Baker's wife: That's what woods are for: For those moments in the woods...Oh, if life were made of moments, Even now and then a bad one--! But if life were only moments, then you'd never know you had one. First a witch, then a child, then a Prince, then a moment--Who can live in the woods? And to get what you wish, only just for a moment--These are dangerous woods..Let the moment go..Don't forget it for a moment, though. Just remembering you had an 'and,' when you're back to 'or,'
Makes the 'or' mean more than is did before. Now I understand--And it's time to leave the woods.

Got a chuckle on this exchange:

Prince: My love, what is it?
Cinderella: Maybe I'm not your only love.
Prince: I love you! Truly, I do.
Cinderella: If you love me, why did you stray?
Prince: Uh...I thought that if you were mine, I would never wish for more.
Cinderella: If this is how you behave as a prince, what kind of king will you be?
Prince: I was raised to be charming, not sincere.
Prince: I shall always love the maiden who ran away.
Cinderella: And I the faraway prince.
