My favourite Shorter is with Blakey and The Jazz Messengers, from way back in his career. His later, more pensive music did away with that verve, which so appealed, enthusing me little. Still, I thought I'd try again with this aptly-named album (being a live recording)? There's much intriguing modal jazz here, all in mid-tempo, but it's got a lot of punch, in large part for the elbow-room taken up by Danilo Pérez, who comes out swinging from the very outset. My big find here is Pegasus, a 23:08 min long masterpiece where Shorter plays the soprano, and additional winds are featured as well. Some lovley ensemble playing with lots of exuberance despite the tight discipline, changing rhythms, ins and outs, and several transcendent passages. Nothing in the wild sphere, but all of it engaging. The audience rightly loves it; don't miss it. Some of the same pulsing tutti playing shapes the next number, Flying Down to Rio. Nice to see a bass stretching out so nicely as Patitucci's does, and, throughout the disc, Danilo Perez's carib piano adds to the proceedings richly as well. Drumming by Brian Blade is loud, sharp and dramatic, which is what I like about this album: it's verbose: a whole lot happens on it. Highly recommended: a recent masterpiece in jazz.
