The past comes back to haunt Sean Dillon and his colleagues, as the New York Times ; bestselling master of suspense returns with a knife-edge story of terrorism, revenge, and a very old nemesis.

In the past few years, the killing and capture of many Al-Qaeda leaders has left the terrorist organization wounded; but by no means dead. And they intend to prove it.

On a dark summer night, two Chechen mercenaries emerge from the waters off Nantucket to kill a high-value target, the former president of the United States, Jake Cazalet. Unfortunately for them, Cazalet has guests with him, including black ops specialist Sean Dillon and his colleague, Afghan war hero Captain Sara Gideon.

The Chechens do not survive the night, but Dillon is curious as to how they even got on the island. What he discovers sends a chill through his bones; a name from very far back in Dillon;s past. If this man is working with the terrorists now, the assassination attempt is only the beginning; and the next time, the results might be much, much different.

A modestly good effort. Not an enthralling plot though Higgins tries to provide motivation for the antagonist. It suffers from the usual flaw of Higgins' novels that the lead characters are virtually indestructible.

A very disappointing read - don't waste your time on it.

good yarn, a simple thriller

A very disappointing read. To many characters, many with no relevance to the story. I never developed any attachment to any of the characters. No more than a "made for TV" movie.

The latest Jack Higgins. The gang's all here including the replacements for those killed off in the past, notably Hannah Bernstein,(in retrospect,he really lost me there) but... this time, I had to have a thorough check on my list that I hadn't read this one before. The earlier books are so much better..I think the publishers are asking too much of Harry Patterson,an 85 year old author with numerous pseudonyms, who should now be able to rest on his considerable laurels.

Just a so-so novel. To many
twists and turns,
Mid-eastern names,along with
many other characters.

Higgins brings Sean Dillon and company back yet again in this latest tale pitting the operatives against a shadowy conspiracy of agents under the employ of a shadowy Al-Qaeda puppetmaster. It's not quite Higgins at his best- the books haven't been the same since he killed off Hannah Bernstein for no reason (and Sara Gideon pretty much is a Hannah Bernstein fill-in), and there are continuity glitches that one can chalk up to Higgins trying to keep his characters of a certain age. Still, the refreshing total lack of the presence of the personality cipher Daniel Holley character helps, as does the complicated motive of the villain.

Read his novels for more than three decades and he (as well as his stories) still sounded the same.

Another fun read from Higgins.
