After nearly thirty years in the same job, Inspector Kurt Wallander is tired, restless, and itching to make a change. He is taken with a certain old farmhouse, perfectly situated in a quiet countryside with a charming, overgrown garden. There he finds the skeletal hand of a corpse in a shallow grave. Wallander's investigation takes him deep into the history of the house and the land, until finally the shocking truth about a long-buried secret is brought to light.

Nice little book. Not too complicated. Almost treated like a short story. Fast read. I always enjoy reading Mankell and his Wallander character.

An archetypal Inspector Kurt Wallander narrative: an interesting and methodical police procedural in a cold and wet Scandinavian setting. I always enjoy the simple, earthy writing style and the imperfect characters that Henning Mankell creates. This particular story is quite short – only 149 pages, so it is a good choice for reading on a flight or vacation.

Thin plot line and little by way of interesting context. It reads like it was written on auto-pilot or dashed off over a week-end. Not Mankell's best or even very good.

Written in 2004 and published in 2014, this novella about a discovery at a house Wallander is looking to buy is a very pleasurable read. There is an excellent Afterword by Mankell about the Wallander series.

All of the Kurt Wallander stories excellent. The books along with the PBS series are good mysteries!
