How Liberals Make It Harder for Blacks to Succeed

"This book explains why so many efforts by liberals to help the black underclass not only fail but often harm the intended beneficiaries. The intentions behind welfare programs may be noble, but in practice they have slowed the self-development that was necessary for other groups to advance. Minimum-wage laws may lift earnings for people who are already employed, but they also have a long history of pricing blacks out of the labor force. Affirmative action in higher education was intended to address past discrimination, but the result is fewer black college graduates, particularly in the fields of math and science, than would have existed in the absence racial preferences. And so it goes with everything from occupational licensing requirements, which make it more difficult for blacks to start businesses, to soft-on-crime laws that make black neighborhoods more dangerous, to policies that limit school choice out of a mistaken belief that charter schools and voucher programs harm the traditional public schools that most low-income students attend. In theory these efforts are intended to help the poor, and poor minorities in particular. In practice they become barriers to moving forward. Please Stop Helping Us lays bare these counterproductive results. People of good will want to see more black socio-economic advancement, but in too many instances the current methods and approaches aren't working. Acknowledging that is an important first step"-- Provided by publisher.

Listen to Mr. Riley and make up your own mind:

Conservatives don't call blacks Uncle Tom, but liberals call them Oreo cookie. I'm shocked at the hatred for this author, whose only crime is to be a Conservative, and book the critics certainly didn't even read.

Let's all feel sorry for conservative African-Americans/other blacks. They're automatically called "Uncle Tom" by their own, as soon as the latter start hearing things they don't like. Pity. But 'write on, Jason'!

This falls under the heading of this guy is a rightwing TOOL, their current Uncle Tom "favorite conservative Black" of the day.

The book, with minimal (if any) non agenda based research (relies on other ultra conservative sources for corroboration more than anything) and uses the same old ultra fundamentalist conservative propaganda tactics of cherry-picking data, taking material out of context, using segments of material which, when looked at as a whole shows an opposing result, and outright lies....

Just WHO the author is:
(List author concedes he forgot Ben Carson... has Jason Riley #1, I would say Carson currently #1 and Riley #2)
(Primarily has a general tone, but does have a typical quote from Riley in there... which reveals either his absolute ignorance or, more likely, his lap dog approach to being a - well paid - Black lackey for the ultra right-wing movement - as the point quoted is an absolute lie)

Jason Riley and right-wingers who really believe that there's some truth to this should find and read the older book, "Black Like Me" (I first read it many years ago) for a dose of reality!

Ignorance in this Age of Information is so offensive as to be an abomination!

Well, since the author is affiliated both with Rupert Murdoch's Wall Street Journal, and Rupert Murdoch's Fox News, which spearheaded the federal legal cases granting American news stations the RIGHT [???] to fictionalize the news, and since it is now legal for the US government to propagandize the citizenry, something which was once ruled illegal, this fellow sounds like a propagandist, not a thinker emeritus!

Lucid and provocative. This book should be read in tandem with "The Triple Package". The government cannot solve all of our problems, and culture matters. At the end of the day, each individual is responsible for how she lives her life.
