I won't leave a star rating, as I didn't finish the movie. It was just too annoying dealing with the awful lighting technique they used to show only half of the protagonist's face in the early jail scenes. It was meant to show the shadow of the jail cell bars on his face, but it was so gratuitous and silly, I simply couldn't take the film seriously at all and gave up.

It is too bad that the library does not have more available copies of this movie. I was intrigued by the high intensity trailer and the fact that there was a well-known actor David Strathairn who I have enjoyed before for his character portrayals.
This movie will not work at all unless you view it with your heart and suspend most of your disbelieve. In my eyes it is a tragicomedy - it is not only about racism - it's about growing up and some of us who are very good at heart becoming jaded and broken in life. The portrayal of faith was touching and educational.

an extraordinary movie, a cross between Beckett and Camus, with knock-out performances from both principals

The films is an adaptation of a play and it shows. It has some very good moments, even if it lacks in development of the secondary characters and there is some oversimplifying as far as the main ones are concerned.
