Darwin's Doubt

The Explosive Origin of Animal Life and the Case for Intelligent Design

Charles Darwin knew that there was a significant event in the history of life that his theory did not explain. In what is known today as the "Cambrian explosion," 530 million years ago many animals suddenly appeared in the fossil record without apparent ancestors in earlier layers of rock. In Darwin's Doubt Stephen C. Meyer tells the story of the mystery surrounding this explosion of animal life--a mystery that has intensified, not only because the expected ancestors of these animals have not been found, but also because scientists have learned more about what it takes to construct an animal.

Expanding on the compelling case he presented in his last book, Signature in the Cell, Meyer argues that the theory of intelligent design--which holds that certain features of the universe and of living things are best explained by an intelligent cause, not an undirected process such as natural selection--is ultimately the best explanation for the origin of the Cambrian animals.

Excellent book for anyone that is open minded and somewhat skeptical that we came out of random changes and natural selection. Even more of an eye opener is Meyer's previous book on the origin of life "Signature in the Cell", that this library doesn't see fit to carry.

Both are truly tour de force.

If one takes the time to read through it and check the references. I find it interesting that many of the so-called "reviews" parrot the same message. I wonder if they read the same book as me! I took my time, read through the book, checked some (not all) of the references, and I can't find where Dr. Meyer distorted or lied about any information.

What I do find is an easy to understand, thought provoking, and contrarian view, which is probably what has the evolutionists up in arms. While curious about the Cambrian Explosion myself, and how so many life forms suddenly (relatively speaking) appeared, I had not done research into the topic. Finally, a work that not only explains another possibility, but does so cogently and with a viable alternative to evolution, which now, I find sorely lacking.

Beautifully written with clarity.

I would recommend this book along with the author's previous book Signature in the Cell to anyone who would like a readable explanation of DNA processes, cell mechanics involved with complex life forms and the reasons many neo-Darwin proponents still have unexplained problems.

The notorious "teach the controversy" wedge strategy. Since the Cambrian radiation event lasted some twenty million years, it is rather slow motion as most explosions go. An "explosion" only relative to the hundreds of millions of years of organic evolution. This title would be more appropriately catalogued with other apologetics in the 200s. ..... Furthermore, the author is not a scientist: .... http://icb.oxfordjournals.org/content/44/6/510.full ....”Stephen C. Meyer is a philosopher who serves as director of the Center for Science and Culture (CSC), the creationist subsidiary of the Discovery Institute, a conservative think tank in Seattle.” .... and an article from Panda’s Thumb: ... “Meyer’s Hopeless Monster” .... http://pandasthumb.org/archives/2004/08/meyers-hopeless-1.html .... ....... Regarding the review by Donald F. Calbreath Ph.D. for the New York Journal of Books, Calbreath is associated with the Family Policy Institute of Washington. ... http://www.fpiw.org/about/who-we-are/dr-donald-f-calbreath.html . ..... As you can see for yourself the FPIW .http://www.fpiw.org/ ....(“Our Issues: Life, Religious Freedom, Parental Rights, Marriage”) is a social conservative activist organization associated with Focus on the Family and Alliance Defense Fund. ... Consider whether he would write an unbiased review on the area of intelligent design (creationism) and evolution. . . .
