Dr. Zol Szabo chose public health for its noble ideals and predictable hours. He never expected to be intimidated by the Prime Minister's Office, roughed up by the RCMP, or threatened by the Hamilton mob. Though Zol and his team have investigated every centimeter of Camelot Lodge, a residence for healthy seniors blessed with generous pensions and high-ranking political connections, the source of the converted mansion's spate of fatal food poisonings remains elusive. As the death count rises, the outbreak threatens Zol's beloved grandfather Art Greenwood, a military veteran, engineering genius, and piano whiz. The Mounties muscle in, and Zol's boss threatens him with exile. Hamish Wakefield, Zol's friend and colleague obsessed with microbes and car washes, discovers dangers at the Lodge that make the rabid bats in the turret and the dumpster-diving cook seem like minor indiscretions. It takes Art Greenwood, marshaling the insights of his silver-haired companions, to expose the deaths for what they are: a string of murders.--From back cover.

Too cutesy

I have reviewed the 2 other books by this author. He needs a better editor. The plot is interesting but character development is heavy handed and lacks subtly and finesse. I doubt that I would ever recommend this author as his writing style is embarrassingly obtuse.

Hamilton, Ontario public health officer Dr. Zol Szabo returns, this time investigating the food related deaths of residents at an upscale retirement residence. Somehow the deaths don’t seem either natural or accidental -- and as Zol digs deeper, he discovers that the victims were political and technological movers and shakers decades before. Could the deaths be murder? And if so, why now? Zol’s investigation is complicated by political pressures, extending right up to the Prime Minister’s office. With a colourful cast of characters, a brisk and complex plot and fascinating insights into our health and food protection systems, the Zol Szabo books are a particular treat for Burlington and Hamilton readers, with lots of local colour and locations, and some clever observations on politics and public service both locally and beyond.

"This slick little medical thriller is the sequel to Tainted, the first Pennie novel that introduced public-health physician Dr. Zol Szabo....a good weekend book."
