Alien love triangle/quadrilateral by the author of Twilight

Nov 18, 2017

Great SciFi. No fantasy/magic. Interesting characters, well developed. Gives some issues to think about.

The movie made me cry so I had to read the book as soon as I heard about it...I found that it was easier to imagine the characters in my mind as I read after seeing the film.

This is nothing like the Twilight series except her writing style. I liked this book much better and enjoyed the characters. However, I have to agree with some of the reviewers who said it was a bit slow at first before things start to speed up and become interesting after about 100+ pages into this 600+ page book. Thus the reason of me giving it a rating of 4/5 instead of 5/5.

Invasion of the pod people! Oh wait... well aliens do invade and take over human bodies and essentially create a world that operates "better" than the one the humans had. But what happens when one of those aliens is inserted into a body who's personality didn't actually go away? Will she learn how wrong it was for this alien race to come along and take over? Will the previous inhabitant of the body be silenced?

This book is a great mix of sci-fi, adventure, romance, and suspense. Being based on a time period in the future, the book begins with an introduction to the new creatures here on our Earth, generally known as aliens now. We as readers learn that for Wanderer, the protagonist who is one of these creatures, it is difficult to control her human host, Melanie. She, or they, are both confused by why this is, as most humans lose control of their bodies when the "souls" inhabit them. Stephanie Meyer takes us on a wild heck of a roller coaster ride, where everything just seems to escalate. Along the way, we learn secrets about both Wanderer (Wanda) and Melanie, just some that they would both die to keep. Why not go find out?

The book is large but worth it to read. Each character is dealing with a struggle, most because of the return of Melanie Stryder. Once you start reading the book you cannot stop, however there are a few tragic bumps along the way, which is why I couldnt stop reading. You end up loving all the characters in the end.

After reading some of the Twilight books, I was kinda hesitant to read this. But I did, just for the fun of it, and it was NOTHING LIKE TWILIGHT. The characters had realistic personalities, and I actually loved reading this book. I also loved how this book managed to be heartbreaking while still having a happy ending.

Ever since the movie for this book came out years ago I have been meaning to read it. I wasn't so sure about it because, well, I didn't necessarily enjoy the Twilight series that Meyer's also wrote. I found the book at a sale a year or two ago and left it on my shelf until I was about to leave for a trip this spring break and thought it would be nice to finally read it on the plane. It kind of surprised me hoe much I enjoyed it. Even when not a whole lot of going on plot-wise, the writing style, the Melanie dilemma, and Wanda's character just kept me captivated in the story. I couldn't stop reading it. 10 more pages I told myself, which more often than not turned into three more chapters, which if I wasn't careful enough, turned into 100 pages gone by. It was an easy, relaxing read that made me think about things from humanity and compassion to sacrifice and love. Honestly it was deeper than I expected, made more complex by the gentle nature of Wanda which was also a strange twist.
Wanda was an enigma. A soul who finds herself unable to connect with the rest of her kind, a wanderer who can't seem to find a planet she belongs on. That changes when she comes to Earth and is given Melanie as a host. Unlike any of her other hosts, Melanie is still very much there, trapped inside her head and angry. This grates on Wanda who is naturally kind, soft-spoken and caring, and makes it even harder when Wanda realizes that Melanie is still strong enough to be keeping some very vital secrets from her. When the secrets start coming out, Wanda needs to make a choice. Find the two boys in Melanie's past whom she feels a resounding yet strange love for, or help out her own society by giving the Seekers possibly crucial info on a human hideout.

I think something that I really enjoyed about this book was Wanda in general. Normally this would have been a dystopian society, written in the point of view of a struggling, strange, angry, sassy human trying to get by without getting caught. In a way, this book was like that, except the character we would have expected to be narrating has already been caught and invaded, replaced by an alien who's already lived many lives and is 'the enemy'. In a dancing-with-wolves kind of fashion, this alien learns after many many trials that the humans aren't as bad as she first suspected, but the weird thing is she's so nice . Through her eyes, you can see the struggle of the humans, the perspective of the all-around gentle souls, and how to show love even to your enemies. Don't get me wrong, I love a strong female character, but a gentle character was also a nice change cause it felt so new.

I really did like this story- loves it really- and would recommend it to anyone.

In the future Earth has been taken over by a unique alien species. The infiltration was slow and undetected until it was too late. Now these aliens, known as Souls, live inside human bodies, which act as hosts for the invading parasites. Usually when a Soul is placed in a new host it is able to take full control of the body, pushing aside any remnant of the human consciousness that once lived inside.

After a Soul named Wanderer is inserted into her new host she soon realizes something isn't right. It seems the human who once inhabited this body refuses to give in and die. Melanie Stryder wants no part of Wanderer and is doing everything she can to fight back. Even though Wanderer controls the body, nothing she does is able to quench Melanie's spirit. She is always there, in her head, so to speak.

As time goes by Melanie's memories become Wanderer's and soon she finds herself longing for the people that meant so much to her host. Melanie left behind her brother and the man she loves, and now Wanderer has developed those same feelings. Soon Wanderer and Melanie begin working together to track down Melanie's loved ones, all the while being careful that they don't lead the other Souls to the humans who are in hiding. When they finally do find them, they must figure out a way to live peacefully with a group of humans who have grown to hate Souls. Emotions flare and relationships are tested in agonizing ways as two lives must share one body and as enemies must learn to co-exist and survive.

Melanie "Mel" Stryder is one of few "wild" humans remaining on earth after invasion. After "insertion" into a human body, alien souls erase the human occupant and establish a claim over the body and mind. Wanderer is a soul who has lived on eight different planets previously, with Mel being her ninth host body. Upon waking inside her new body, Wanderer is shocked by the power and vividness of human emotions, memories, and senses, and quickly learns that Melanie is not willing to give up the entirety of her mind.

Jul 13, 2009

A member of a species that takes over the minds of human bodies, Wanderer is unable to disregard his host's love for a man in hiding, a situation that forces both possessor and host to become unwilling allies.

Lauren Jul 24, 2008

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact and continue their lives apparently unchanged. Most of humanity has succumbed. When Melanie, one of the few remaining "wild" humans, is captured, she is certain it is her end. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, was warned about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the glut of senses, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind. Wanderer probes Melanie's thoughts, hoping to discover the whereabouts of the remaining human resistance. Instead, Melanie fills Wanderer's mind with visions of the man Melanie loves, a human who still lives in hiding named Jared. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer begins to yearn for a man she has been tasked with exposing. When outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off on a dangerous and uncertain search for the man they both love.
