It is 1970. "Bean" Holladay is twelve and her sister Liz is fifteen when their artistic mother Charlotte, a woman "who flees every place she's ever lived at the first sign of trouble, " takes off to "find herself." She leaves her girls enough money for food to last a month or two. But when Bean gets home from school one day and sees a police car outside the house, she and Liz board a bus from California to Virginia, where their widowed Uncle Tinsley lives in the decaying antebellum mansion that's been in the family for generations.

I loved this book and want to read more by Walls! It would make a great movie. Some of the most believable characters I have met recently. Tension builds as you meet Maddox and wonder what he is up to and how it will affect these girls.

I really enjoyed Bean. She's a bit like Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird.
The other characters weren't as developed as Bean. Perhaps this is Bean's story but it seemed wider than that and the others were worth exploring deeper than they were.
Jeannette Walls reads this story well.
The story of Liz & Bean's lives with their unstable mother is touching and told with understanding and love. The mother is never turned into a bad or unwanted mother. She's loved by her daughters, despite her problems; they respect her for who she is and what she brings to their family when she's able.
This was an interesting story and I loved the addition of the emus.

Author's first fiction novel for adults and teens. Not as good as Half Broke Horses and The Glass Castle.
