Every frame feels lived in, fresh, penetrating. Some critics accused it of wandering, but I'm afraid they've been so long subjected to mindless action and formulae, they missed the artistry at work here. This film evolves like life itself with all it's messy unpredictability and contradictions. Everything about Rust and Bone is startlingly, brilliantly original. A luminary no less than Cate Blanchett praised Cotillard's performance as "simply astonishing...Marion has created a character of nobility and candour, seamlessly melding herself into a world we could not have known without her. Her performance is as unexpected and as unsentimental and raw as the film itself"

French movie with English subtitles. NOT FOR CHILDREN. Dog fighting films are unethical, so what does this movie say about a doggy type of man and his brutal fights? Scenes of child neglect and abuse. Haggard legless woman supposedly has enough education to train orcas. I don't think so... One good scene where an orca follows the woman's hand when she goes to a marine world type facility to visit. PORNOGRAPHICAL scenes including the man touching his penis. Trashy movie.

Over the last few years, there had been news of Orca "revolts" in a few of the "entertainment for the masses" aquariums. Reading the blurb on the DVD cover gives one hope that this might be the subject. Sorreee! I made the severe mistake of not paying attention to the name of the director - Jacques Audiard - one of the worst hacks in French Cinema (Wha?, he hasn't moved to Hollywood, yet?) Consequently, the Orca theme was 99% irrelevant (Cotillard might as well have fallen down an elevator shaft in a fit of petulance.)
So what do we have here? Just the usual Hollywood schlock scenario topped by layer upon layer of bathos and holes in the continuity that you could drive a truck through.

Sort of an uneven movie, with plot holes big enough for an Orca do dive through, but interesting and unusual.

Absolutely loved this film full of so much raw emotion heart wrenching at times - I thought it was a great film and
Marion Cotillard and Matthias Schoenaerts both give stellar performances - thoroughly enjoyed this movie

Two damaged, self absorbed, emotionally immature adults who keep coming together in an attempt to eke out from each other whatever they need and think the other might have to offer. And a largely neglected child. Sometimes lives such as these can incrementally improve as the parties involved persist in spite of their collective damage, and sometimes such a connection only serves to drive each of them even further into the dark, but sometimes it's only where you yourself sit on the scale of personal baggage and/or socio-economics that determines your judgement of such situations....

Great movie. The story was unusual and yet compelling. The characters were flawed which only served to make them more interesting.

It seems people are really divided by a love or hate of this film. Yet I found it to be good, but not mind blowing. The performances are stellar & the vfx was clean. The end was a bit Hollywoodish...but who doesn't like a happy ending. Recommended for those who like romance films.

Proof that a French movie can be even worse than the meretricious "Tell No One." These movies are so ugly that the viewer receives an indelible sense of how bad the cipher characters must smell. The killer whales give better performances, despite being treated as aquatic murder weapons by the worthless director, than the wormy humans. While Marion Cotillard looks terrible with listless long hair (she either needs a curling iron or a bob) the non-actor playing her cruddy boyfriend and his butch little son could, between them, kill off all interest in the buzz cut. This vile movie about boring, white-trash non-entities is a DISASTER, and that's phrasing it charitably, folks. The director's music choices fall somewhere between cynical and the pits.

I started off not caring for this movie, but glad I stuck with it.
