Exceptional collection of five PBS documentaries focused on the war. Reconstruction is a two part look at the aftermath of the war and its effect on society, politics, economics, and most importantly race relations, with a wide range of stories. The documentary on the 54th Massachusetts tells the story of the real regiment behind the movie Glory, one of the earliest black regiments to serve, whose bravery at Fort Wagner allowed many more to follow in their wake. Lincoln's Secret Weapon explores the history behind the USS Monitor, the revolutionary ironclad warship that- in combat with a Confederate ironclad ship of a different design- changed the way naval warfare was waged, and follows efforts to preserve some of the wreck's remains. The Gettysburg documentary follows the specifics of the battle through letters of the men who fought there. The most compelling of the five documentaries recounts the life of John Brown, the radical abolitionist whose actions brought about the war in his wake. Essential viewing for those with an interest in the era.
