Alice Hoffman chronicles the harrowing siege at Masada in 70 C.D. Facing a frightening Roman army, 900 Jews held their own for months. But in the end, only two women and five children survived the culminating battle. Here, Hoffman traces the women's steps to Masada.

This is probably one of the longest audiobooks I've ever listened to, but it was so GOOD! Hoffman fleshes her characters out beautifully, and you feel as though these people were/are real. Hoffman uses language in a way that I haven't seen a good author use in a while, and she paints the scenes of the desert and the sights and smells and sounds of Masada as if she had been there. She instantly became one of my favorite authors after The Museum of Extraordinary Things.
