LibraryLoungeLizard - read the book and the movie makes a LOT more sense... The movie did NOT do the book justice

Did not enjoy this movie at all, but truly LOVE sci-fi and we are such BIG sci-fi fans, so maybe should give this a 2nd chance? The story was confusing, laughable special effects even for 80's standards, some pizza face dude flying around, and long and boring. The wife and I fell asleep.

Classic !!!!!! 420~ Amazing set design, music and acting. Bizarre ?? Yes !!! Incomprehensible ?? Very much so !!! that is what makes it truly unique> A stoner classic $$$$ Me and my friends have been watching this since the 8th grade and know every line of dialogue and music cure . Watch many times over and over and be hypnotized and stupefied into a grotesque existential state of mental decay ~666

This movie isn't entirely successful- even at the time of it's release some of it was henky, and now some of the effects have aged horribly. However, there are parts of the film that DO work- very well, and this is what it makes it worth watching. The film is a different beast from the book by Frank Herbert ( which you should read ), and is superior to the lukewarm TV series.

Even more than most of David Lynch's deliberately bizarre and idiosyncratic movies, Dune is a "love-it-or-hate-it" affair. An ambitious, epic, utterly mind-boggling--and, let's admit it, all-out weird--adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic science fiction novel, Dune remains one of the most controversial films in the director's exceedingly provocative career.

Yes, folks - You know you're really in big trouble when the film's opening narration (setting up the story) is completely incomprehensible!

This $47 million, Sci-Fi fiasco, based on Frank Herbert's famous novels, is set in the year 10,991. Dune's production required that 80 elaborate sets be built on 16 massive sound stages.

To be as fair as I possibly can be with this film - It is quite visually imaginative at times. Yes, that it is. But, unfortunately, it's a movie-adventure that's utterly joyless and totally oppressive - not to mention l-o-n-g.

Upon its initial release in 1984, Dune bombed (big time) at the box office. Not one, single movie-critic gave it a favorable review. Director David Lynch immediately distanced himself from the movie, stating publicly that pressures from both the producers and the financiers restrained his artistic control and denied him the final cut.

All-In-All - Dune really is a mess. It's an incomprehensible, ugly, unstructured, pointless excursion into the murkier realms of one of the most confusing screenplays of all time.

After waiting for this movie to come out and seeing the trailers, it was a vast disappointment. The worst part was the editing. The tv series was far superior.

David Lynch had a famously horrible time making this film, & Frank Herbert purists will only ever find things to gripe about, but if you feel like a cool, bizarre, uplifting hero story in outer space, you could do a heck of a lot worse. If you're an electronic music fan you'll enjoy how abundantly the soundtrack has been sampled. The battle scenes, the worms, the child witch dancing triumphantly with the dagger...I've seen it enough times now I just watch it to spend some time in that world occasionally, you know, & it's neat-o. Love it. CR

After watching this again (after decades), I'm scratching my head as to why I wanted to revisit this. The book is an amazing adventure. This is a David Lynch pipe dream with a really bad screenplay, horrible acting and frighteningly bad costumes.

Read the book first or you won't really understand the movie. The movie is a poor attempt at portraying the book. I give the book at 10/10 and the movie a 4/10.

It is that will alone that I set my mind in motion. It is by the juice of sapho thoughts acquire speed, the lips acquire stains, the stains become a warning. It is by will alone that I set my mind in motion.
