Especially for a paranormal-type premise, this whole series was amazingly well-done and had a complexity and realism in its main character that I haven't seen for a long time. It looks at very intense emotional issues without oversimplifying or holding back, such as guilt and PTSD, and really just looks at life and how we live it. On a more specific note, I particularly loved the historical references and anecdotes, as well as the slow pacing of the books which were driven more by her emotional growth than external plot events and drama. A refreshing and insightful series, and with much romantic interest for when her farm life seems a bit slow... :) Good humor, emotional depth, and insight.

This book managed to dig into some of the complexity of dealing with trauma, which I really didn't expect from an immortal fantasy novel. The author made the connection that a longer life means more trauma that you need to deal with. The biggest flaw is that it's not really clear why the main character has so much more of a conscience than the other immortals she is around, or why this conscience is only kicking in at the start of the story (presumably she was fine with doing terrible things throughout the rest of her life). The ending was also relatively predictable and shamelessly promoted a sequel because there was no real resolution.

Wow, really good book. Didn't think I'd be able to get into the story, but the characters were intriguing and realistic for having been alive so long, and what they would be feeling, etc. Not a lot happens, but the back story and little glimpses into Nastasya's history is great. Also, I really want to know what happens next.

Wow. You know you've found a great writer when not much happens in the actual story line but the style of writing means that you don't care.
