Interesting but Malkovitch has done better.

Malkovich gives a marvelous performance as the Great Buck Howard who has passed his glory days on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. His portrayal of the pompous, talented mentalist also shows an oddly vulnerable man who may not fully realize his current situation. Colin Hanks and Emily Blunt lead the supporting characters who make this such a fun movie. Another treat is the interview with the Amazing Kreskin in Special Features.

I found this a very entertaining film. The story is basically a portrait of a magician “The Great Buck Howard” (he calls himself a “Mentalist”) whose career is on the decline, left with dwindling gigs in small towns across the US. The story is told pretty much from the eyes of a young wannabe writer who Howard hires as his Road Manager and while ostensibly a comedy satirizing fame and fortune in the entertainment world, also probes the darker issue of how that all starts to slowly and sadly disintegrate as time goes on. Overall the film impressed me as having real substance, probably due to the fact that it is based on the screenwriter and director Sean McGinley’s actual personal experience as the Road Manager for the magician/mentalist The Amazing Kreskin.

Really quite funny and delightful. I found myself laughing and smiling through most of it.

John Malkovich has to be the most over rated hog in Hollywood. I didn't much like him in "The Great Buck Howard," but the story is good enough to let me tough it out until John's last greasy grin. 3 out of 5.

Good – The Great Buck Howard (2009) 90 min. John Malkovich is wonderful as Buck Howard, a “mentalist” who appeared on the Tonight Show WITH JOHNNY CARSON 61 times (you’ll understand the importance of this coveted fact). Buck Howard is not the nicest fellow on the planet as attested to by his road managers; one being Colin Hanks’ character, who dropped out of law school to discover his true passion. The film portrays two men on separate journey’s together; one at the supposed end of one’s career and the other looking for that great start. The charm in this film is that the characters are warm despite the hard exterior of Buck Howard and the fact that Buck Howard performs a “trick” that the viewer is dying to discover how he does it. The film is based on the experiences of writer-director Sean McGinly who worked briefly as the road manager for Kreskin.. This is a well-intentioned film that may receive an Oscar nomination for Best Actor (Malkovich) in 2010.
