Isabelle Copley's visionary art frees ancient spirits. As the young student of the cruel, brilliant artist Vincent Rushkin, she discovered she could paint images so vividly real they brought her wildest fantasies to life. But when the forces she unleashed brought tragedy to those she loved, she turned her back on her talent -- and on her dreams.

Now, twenty years later, Isabelle must come to terms with the shattering memories she has long denied, and unlock the slumbering power of her brush. And, in a dark reckoning with her old master, she must find the courage to live out her dreams and bring the magic back to life.

I remember this journal about a "city" a group of houses that never is real. All the males and females in the story or "Newford" never lived. I remember this one female creates these images or photographs of males and females never lived and they become real in her life.

In a sense, we all live in our own private fantasy worlds because we each perceive the world differently. This well-written novel is about our individual perceptions of reality and how our memories can silently reinterpret past events to the point where what we remember is quite different from what actually happened. Charles de Lint carefully dramatizes this notion by having his characters describe events inconsistently, always leaving the reader wondering what really happened. The book is set in the fictional city of Newford, which is featured in many of de Lint's other novels. The writing was smooth, elegant, and felt fresh. On the other hand, I found the characterization uneven: the various numena were wonderfully realized, but many of the human characters, such as Alan, felt extremely flat. Although the book is rather long, I wasn't troubled because de Lint had so many interesting things to say about friendship and community, and about the power and responsibility of being a creator.

If the description of this book mentions Bettina and Kellygnow, it's the wrong description...that description belongs to FORESTS OF THE HEART.

MEMORY AND DREAM is about an artist who paints pictures from her imagination, but soon sees these characters in real life. It's my favorite book by him.
