A picture book biography of Cheraw, SC native Dizzy Gillespie. While it does describe a difficult childhood punctuated by bullies and "whoopings" from his father, it spends more time showing how he overcame his troubles by blowing on his trumpet and doing everything he could to be recognized as the brilliant, inventive trumpet player we recognize today.

This book contains pictures of a father physically abusing his son, and then the son beating up other kids at school. Can't believe this is in the children's section as a picture book. My three-year-old daughter took this book home; I had no idea what was in it. Fortunately it went right over her heard but in the future I will be much more careful about checking books over before I check them out.

After reading this book, I thought about this man "Dizzy" quite often. I like books like that. To me, that means it was a good book. One that makes you think!

John had a rough childhood, but came out a winner with good morals. The message of this book is to be yourself, in a world that wants you to be somebody else.

This book discusses child abuse and racial discrimination in a very abrupt way. Parents may want to preview this book prior so giving it to children to read so that they can have a discussion together about these topics.
