When Hannah dares to love across the boundaries of tradition, will she lose everything?

Despite being raised in a traditional Old Order Amish family, seventeen-year-old Hannah Lapp desires to break with custom, forgo baptism into the faith, and marry outside the cloistered community. She's been in love with Mennonite Paul Waddell for three years, and before returning to college for his senior year, Paul asks Hannah to be his wife. Hannah accepts, aware that her marriage will change her relationship with her family forever.

On the evening of their engagement, tragedy strikes and in one unwelcome encounter, all that Hannah has known and believed is destroyed. As she finds herself entangled in questions that the Old Ways of her people cannot answer, Hannah faces the possibility of losing her place in her family, in her community- and in the heart of the man she loves.

Ohh PULEEEASE,Calamity after Calamity,after Calamity!
I made it to page 182 and then I just couldn't take anymore of the calamities in this book!I read fiction for pleasure, though I also tackle tough subjects when I read NONfiction, but I do not want my fiction books full of ANGST!

Nor could I take anymore of all the character's ridiculous belief that a God who would allow all these horrible tragedies in the first place, would then for some unfathomable reason.... just turn around and make everything 'hunkey-dory'! Well isn't that just so mighty good of God!

Too many nasty characters and tragic situations and just plain stupidity. Much more enjoyable Amish fiction than this available. Will not be reading any more of this series! Do not recommend, unless you enjoy reading unbelievablable 'downers'!

one of my favourite all time books. I can read it again and again and it still makes me cry. I love anything by this author and read through the books quickly. I feel like I know the characters intimately and can imagine living there with them.

Difficult subject matter but easy read. Rather predictable ending.

I loved this book. It is a rare peek behind the "perfect" veneer of the Christian family, where things do not always work the way we think they should, even for the faithful. The author drew me into the world of the Amish, and the life of Hannah. I could not put it down!

It is the best book until page 14. At page 14 to the end, it is so depressing. It is the saddest book I ever read. All the characters were miserable and so was I to the sour end. My suggestion is to read pages 1-13 and quit. I wish I had stopped on page 13.
