There was a silence and then he continued.
"I didn't have to see you. I wanted to, though. I had to make sure."
"Make sure of what?"
"Make sure I hated you."

"We were like brothers," I said, desperate. " you were my best friend-" He laughed then, and his eyes were the golden, hard, flat eyes of a jungle animal. "Like a friend once said to me, 'That was then, and this is now.'"

Add a CommentI absolutely loved 'The Outsiders' so I decided to read so of S. E. Hinton's other work. This book made me glad I did. Mark and Bryon are characters that feel so real. I love how Hinton's characters from her books appear in her other books. Although the ending shocked me and made me angry at the characters, it was realistic. Overall I loved this book, and would recommend it and S. E. Hinton's other books to just about anybody.
I thought that since I loved "The Outsiders" so much, I would start reading the author's other works, and boy am I impressed! This book was short and easy to read, but fantastic! As others have said, the ending is sad and will tug at your heartstrings, but please don't let that stop you from reading! It makes you think about life just a little deeper (something Mark never had any desire to do.)
teaches great life lessons
This book left me thinking about a lot of things as most amazing books do....Very insightful and genuine. S.E Hinton really is the voice of the youth. Unlike most people she isn't afraid to tell the truth about life.
This book is amazing!!! If you liked the outsiders youll most likely like this book as well!!!!! The charectors are amazing in both books!!!
This book is very sad, but very good. Whoever has read The Outsiders and liked it, this book is for you. ( Btw, very depressing ending, but, well, that's life!)
I honestly couldn't read more than one chapter because it was written way differently than Tex and The Outsiders. What I read was good, but not The Outsiders good.
A really engaging drama ... you wont believe the ending!!
It is an ok book.
Depressing ending, it just seemed hopeless at the end.
