So often books written by celebrities/politicians are a slog to get through, but this was not a chore in the slightest. The strongest bits of the book are the parts that take place before her husband's political career really takes off -- the bits about growing up in Chicago, about being a black girl at a very fancy, very white school (Princeton), about falling in love with the hotshot young lawyer who worked at her firm one summer -- and I found the portion that covered the 2008 campaign and her time in the White House to be the least compelling, because it got into a bit too political/policy detail and it felt overly polished and performative (though some of the behind-the-scenes glimpses of details of life in the White House were fascinating). However, she is very adept at conveying the strangeness (without ever using that word) of being married to someone so extraordinary, and you finish the book with the feeling that you’ve just spent time with a very smart, eloquent friend.

Genuinely so stoked to read this book. Once it was published, our entire library system ended up with a giant line of holds. Someday, it'll show up on the shelf for me. But honestly, I've heard such good things about it, and I can't wait to enjoy it for myself!

I've just finished reading Becoming and am pretty disappointed. Michelle Obama is a good writer, or maybe she had a great editor. It's a pleasant read from an entertainment point of view. But, I was really disheartened by her limited view of how to make changes for people of color and poor people. She did talk about all of the racist slights that she had received and about how she'd worked with the Univ. of Chicago Medical Center to improve access to medical care for the local people in the Southside of Chicago-where she had grown up. But really the whole book was infused with her assent from disadvantaged circumstances to First Lady-the American Dream-with apparently little realization of how that type of thinking actually backfires on our society in many ways.

For someone with such an amazing and unique life, I was surprised to find that this book was fairly vanilla. It seemed almost too polished. There was no real emotion or feeling in the memoir, making it feel more like a biography than an autobiography.
Not to mention, many of the anecdotes were far too detailed. In the first hour of the audiobook, there was not a single anecdote that interested me. Making herself a sandwich? Playing at a piano recital? Having a bad teacher? These experiences are boring and should have been edited out.

Just a little too much detail, much of which
was not particularly interesting to this reader.
Perhaps one needs to be an American to really
appreciate this biography.
Did not finish.

If you love Mrs. Obama, this will make you love her more. If you find her interesting, this will fascinate you. If you can only see the color of her skin, skip this book.

I look forward to this wonderful woman's perspective on being thrust into a role that she never thought would happen to her. How she wore the moniker 'First Lady' is with grace and intellect. I have heard bits of recordings through Huffington Post and it has inspired me to go out and purchase it because the warmth of her voice is so kind.

After spending sixty years enduring party politics; it has been so refreshing experiencing the Obama administration. I was lucky to have witness JFK and the joyous space race revolution that really kick-started the age of technology. Can't wait to read First Lady Obama's book; I sure she will bring her style of class and elegance.
