A very good sci-fi for young teens, its targeted audience, and okay for grown-ups as well, It succeeded to drive home the message on unconditional familial love and accepting oneself. The science on time travel adventure is quite credible for the film's imaginative world. Last, don't miss the two full length music videos in bonus -- only small segments of them were played during the film.

Best quote, both by Meg:
From the book: Maybe I don’t want to be like everybody else either.
From the film: Because they felt your love. And you should love me because I deserve to be loved! (Adapted from book's quote which is a possible SPOILER for some ... see "Quotes".)

Terrible CGI that belongs on network TV, not a Disney feature. You have some rather horrible performances that deserve Razzies. The main girl is fine, but she's not given anything to work with. She just reacts to bad special effects with wonder. It seems to deviate from the book quite a bit at times and was Oprah suppose to be a joke? I laughed at her everytime she spoke. Oprah CAN act, but she was just horribly miscast here. It just failed every box. CGI: bad, Directing: horrible, acting: bad, writing: horrible... It's a tricky story to do, but I believe with a good director that has more experience with CGI would have helped immensely. Also, a better script closer to the source material.

A controversial book adaptation (more so than the older movie version) -- people seem to either love it or hate it. I'm somewhere in the middle. Ambivalent. I liked the acting by the kids; it seemed quite natural, though the adults' acting seemed wooden and even robotic. The costumes were unintentionally ugly. The special effects were stunning, but they could have been used to greater effect especially in the climactic scene. Several of the most imaginative scenes in the book were left out (though they were not essential to the plot). The Christian message of love in the book sometimes comes through, but in other places is watered down with new-age cliches or replaced by the usual Hollywood platitude "believe in yourself" (not "believe in yourself because God made you special"). All in all a halfhearted attempt that seemed to be afraid to make a point, though not entirely unenjoyable if one ignores this.

So, if you have a hideous costume, you don't even try to act? The kids were adorable, and they did a good job. The adults were stiff, and either stony/stiff/constipated or emoting.

I remember loving this book when I first read it 50 yrs ago. I also remember it as inspiration for my love of sci-fi. Man, I have to read this again. This movie is a jumbled miss-match. The only redeeming feature was Reese Witherspoon. Please, skip this and read the book again. I know I will.

Disappointing
There was a cute theme and message to it but it was boring. They spent most of the movie explaining things instead of doing things. It needs more action.
