So who were the "hostiles" in this calvary mission ordered by then President Benjamin Harrison that took place along the way from New Mexico to Montana? By extension, in the director's own words from bonus material: "The racial divide in our country is widening. We’re living in polarized times, and I wanted to speak to this notion that we need to better understand one another and to reconcile. I think America needs to heal. My characters’ journey from New Mexico to Montana becomes an enlightenment..." A bit drawn out for my taste but believe the idea is for viewers to take time to reflect during those moments before the next.

As westerns go "Hostiles" rates above average in my view. Lots of blood-letting and payback is accompanied by several good performances. For those who whine and lament historical inaccuracies and its various injustices then I say stay away from westerns. As someone once put it, "If it didn't happen that way, then it damn well should have!"

Finally, a story about how badly the American Indians were treated.

Tried to watch the movie, bc Christian Bale is in it. Did not finish the movie, it wasn't any good at all. Mr. Bale has not done any good movie in the last few years. Sad.

Awful, don't bother, half a star

Graves and graves and graves. A somber and elegiac western with particularly strong performances.

The "Duke" rides again. This is a perfect reprise of a genre that John Wayne perfected and personified. Sorry, Christian Bale does a great job but he is not quite the steely eyed avenger that Wayne once was. Forget the inaccuracies and enjoy the film

As harsh and as brutal as a Cormac McCarthy novel, but a great addition to the Western genre. I was gripped throughout the film. Rosamund Pike gives a particularly stirring performance.

As Westerns go this is another round in the chamber of revisionist history where the characters spend far too much time speaking for the guilt of the modern age. Once you get past the historical inaccuracies, which are many, the acting and cinematography makes it bearable. Rosamund Pike gives an excellent portrayal of a pioneer woman. Bale, as always, nails it as an officer of Frontier Regulars. Both Bale and Ben Foster delve into the heart of darkness. The theme is that essentially the settlement of the West was a violent genocidal affair. Really, this is not new. So once the viewer is confronted with this, we are led to believe that everyone will reconcile and those that make it will have a happy ending?

I was with you until the end but Mexico lost the war and people had a choice of staying or leaving. The past is over

The soldier:
I was fighting for the Grays. You know, if you sign up to be a soldier... it's your job. But if you don't do your job, then you're lying in a heap like DeJardin. And you remember that. You know, I've killed everything that's walked or crawled. Men. Women. Children. All colors. If you do it enough... you get used to it. It doesn't mean a thing. That's what I'm afraid of. What you don't get used to is...
Is losing men. I've lost a lot of men.
I saw what happened to the 4th when Yellow Hawk and his dog soldiers got done with them. And there wasn't a...
Don't you dare laugh. There wasn't enough left of those poor men to fill a slop pail. Understand... When we lay our heads down out here, we're all prisoners.
I hate them. I got a war bag of reasons to hate them.

One type of hostiles:
Reckon they're lucky it was no Comanche raping them. They'd cut them stem to stern. I once knew a woman down in Texas whose nose was burnt clean to the bone. Flesh gone. Nostrils wide open. Then they cut her beau's sack off, too, and stuffed his testicles in his mouth while he was squirming around.
Those folks in the Indian Bureau ought to come out here and spend a few weeks at Fort Winslow or on a reservation. The sickness, the starvation, the conditions those poor souls have to live under is nothing short of inhumane.
We think, but, like ants, they just keep coming.
They're human beings. They deserve to be treated as such. And need I mention
they were here first?

Something tells me you ain't got the nerve to fire that, woman.
Where we come from, Natives ain't got no rights.
-President's orders. There ain't no writing on no paper, president or not, can tell me what I can and can't do on my property.
Sometimes I envy the finality of death. The certainty. And I have to drive those thoughts away when I'm weak. We'll never get used to the Lord's rough ways, Joseph.
Who've you become, Joe? Letting me die by the gallows, and saving this savage. I mean... You ain't who I thought you was. I would've died for you. And my brothers-in-arms did die for you.
