Any rational discussion of the greatest guitarists in rock history must include Jimmy Page, most famous for his work with Led Zeppelin. Martin Power’s detailed new book, “No Quarter: The Three Lives of Jimmy Page”, chronicles the life of Page from childhood to the present, with heavy emphasis on the Zeppelin era. One of the greatest bands in the history of rock was formed when guitarist/producer/composer Jimmy Page formed Led Zeppelin with singer/lyricist Robert Plant, bass and keyboard player John Paul Jones, and drummer John Bonham. They knew they were on to something big, pretty much from the start. And, Jimmy Page led the way. He knew what kind of music he wanted to play and as the producer of their albums, he knew how to bring it all together. Page and the band’s manager, Peter Grant, constructed a business model unique for the times. The band members were disciplined enough to follow it, achieving artistic and financial success. They were not immune to the temptations of sex, drugs, and rock and roll, but when it was time to write music, they wrote. When it was time to record, they recorded. When it was time to perform, they performed. And, when it was time to party, they partied. Sadly, it all came to an abrupt end with the death of John Bonham. I suppose it is no great spoiler to say that the “three lives” in the book’s title refer to Jimmy Page’s three distinct phases of life: pre-Zeppelin, Zeppelin, and post-Zeppelin. I imagine that many of Led Zeppelin’s die-hard fans would describe their lives the same way.
